CTFLogo2_small.jpgThe Canadian Tenpin Federation team selection committee has made their final decisions on the additional team members for 2012 Team Canada.

With the added importance of the 2012 PABCON Championships as a qualifier for the 2013 World Championships, the importance on team performance this year was universally understood. The committee had a challenging task to balance development and leadership on the team.

The six men’s team members who earned their team spots at the 2011 Canadian National Championships held in the Montreal area in May of 2011 resulted in three veteran competitors and three new comers. With this in mind, the committee chose two experienced competitors for the 2012 Men’s team.

200910PBAGeorgeLambertIV.jpg2010BWCMichaelSchmidt.jpgGeorg Lambert IV (pictured left) formerly of Hamilton, Ontario and now living in Texas, and Michael Schmidt (right), Winnipeg, Manitoba were selected for the men’s team.

Lambert IV has been a member of the Youth or Adult Team Canada since 2000. He has earned numerous medals for Canada and was the 2000 and 2009 Male Bowler of the Year. Lambert IV has also bowled on the Professional Bowlers tour.

Schmidt is one of only two multiple winners of the Bowling World Cup. He claimed the 2005 and 2010 crowns and will defend his title in Johannesburg, South Africa in late November and December.

2008BWCJenniferPark.jpgJennifer Park (left), Nanaimo, British Columbia and Kim Green, Duncan, BC were selected for the women.

Park is a veteran member of Team Canada and recently won a silver medal at the 2011 Pan American Games. Park will also bowl for Canada at the Bowling World Cup in Johannesburg. Green has had a consistent record in her performance at the 2010 and 2011 Canadian National Championships, finishing seventh and 10th.

First tenpin bowling site in Afganistan

Afghanistan, October 2011

With a per capita GDP of $900, Afghanistan ranks as one of the world’s ten poorest countries. By any measure, challenges are numerous. Aid agencies observe an erosion of women’s rights as foreign troops prepare to leave, the infant mortality rate is among the world’s highest, and despite eradication efforts, 90 percent of the world’s opium is still produced by Afghan farmers. Meanwhile, military fatalities approach 2800 since the war began in 2001. Civilians are afforded no such precision for their casualties, with varying estimates in the tens of thousands being the only accounting. Gathered here are images from the country made in October of the lives of women and children, daily life, and consequences of the conflict in Afghanistan and in the United States. — Lane Turner (37 photos total)

Meena Rahmani, 26, owner of The Strikers, the country’s first bowling center, holds a bowling ball in Kabul. In an Afghan capital scarred by years of war, a young Afghan woman has bet $1 million that the country could use a chance to have a bit of fun. Located just down the street from Kabul’s glitziest mall, it offers a place where Afghan men, women and families can gather, relax, bowl a few games and not be burdened by the social, religious and cultural restrictions that govern daily life in the impoverished country. Senior ten-pin bowlers chasing state glory

By , November 9th 2011 | Category: Sport

Colac’s Neil Thompson, Jean McArthur and Kevin Bagg will represent two Colac Ten-pin Bowling Association teams to contest Victorian Ten-Pin Bowling’s Senior Shield in Colac this weekend.

COLAC’S top senior ten-pin bowlers will chase their first state victory in four years this weekend.

More than 100 of Victoria’s best over-45 bowlers will converge on Colac’s Strikes and Spares this weekend for Victorian ten-pin bowling’s senior shield.

Colac will field one men’s and one women’s team of five to contest the two-day tournament chasing their first overall win since 2007.

Bowler Kevin Bagg said he expected Colac’s teams to be competitive against 10 other associations from across Victoria.

“I would think we’d be right up there, we should have won last year but we fell away a bit in the last game,” he said.

The Patterson family, a mainstay in the Macon bowling scene for 40 years, had something very unusual happen to them this past week.

As previously reported, Travis Patterson achieved his seventh perfect game bowling in the Wednesday Night Mixed league. The very next week, his father, Joe Patterson, also posted a 300, bowling in the Commercial Tenpin league.
